Your Photo Is Your Salesperson
Online, customers can't touch, feel, or try your product. Your photo has to do all the convincing. The good news? You don't need a studio or expensive camera. Your smartphone is enough.
Rule 1: Clean Background
The #1 mistake sellers make? Taking photos on messy beds, dirty tables, or cluttered floors. Your product should be the star.
- Use a plain white wall or a clean sheet as your backdrop
- A white cardboard or foam board from any stationery shop costs under ₦500
- Place your product on a clean surface — a white or light-colored table works great
Rule 2: Use Natural Light
Artificial lighting creates harsh shadows and yellow tints. Instead:
- Shoot near a window during the day (10am-2pm is best)
- Face your product toward the window, not away from it
- Avoid direct sunlight — cloudy days actually give the softest, best light
Rule 3: Show Multiple Angles
One photo isn't enough. Aim for 3-4 shots:
- Front view — The main shot customers see first
- Close-up — Show texture, quality, details
- Scale shot — Hold it or place it next to something familiar so buyers know the size
- In-use shot — Show someone wearing/using it (for fashion, this is essential)
Rule 4: Edit Lightly
Don't over-filter. Customers want to see what they're actually getting. Use your phone's built-in editor to:
- Increase brightness slightly
- Crop out distracting edges
- Adjust contrast if the photo looks dull
Free apps like Snapseed (Android/iPhone) give you professional-level control for free.
Rule 5: Be Consistent
When all your product photos have the same style — same background, same lighting — your store looks professional and trustworthy. This is what separates "random seller" from "serious business."
