Stop Losing Sales to "How Much?": Answers on Your Page, and a Phone That's On

Buyers ask three sellers and buy from the first one who replies. Here's how to answer once on your store, reply like a person, and stay reachable without burning your data.

"How much?"

Two words. If you sell online in Nigeria, you've typed the reply hundreds of times, and it feels like selling. Often it's the start of a sale that quietly dies.

This post is about why, and about three habits that fix it: put the answers on your page, reply like a person, and stay reachable. The sellers below are made-up examples, but you'll probably recognise them.

The buyer who asked three sellers

Ada sells handbags online. On a normal morning she gets 14 messages that all say "How much?" She copies and pastes the same price, the same colours, the same delivery details into each chat. By afternoon she's tired and her replies slow down.

One of those buyers, Funmi, had asked three sellers about the same kind of bag. Ada replied after three hours. Funmi had already ordered from the seller who answered in ten minutes.

Its not that Ada was lazy, she was drowning in repeats.

The truth is that buyers compare. Many of them message several sellers and go with whoever answers first and makes buying easy. Speed wins ties, and a chat that starts from zero is slow.

Put the answers on the page

Think about what buyers ask every time: the price, the sizes or colours, whether it's available, how delivery works, and what it really looks like.

Your UPshop product page can answer all of that before the buyer says a word. It shows the price, the options, whether the item is available to order, and your photos, with a main photo plus up to four extra views. You can also set how delivery works for your store.

Do it once, and every buyer who clicks your link arrives with most of the answers. The chat changes from "How much?" to "Is this colour good for the office?", which is a question that leads to a sale.

A quick checklist for each product:

  • A clear price
  • Sizes, colours or other choices set up properly
  • A main photo of the single item, plus extra views of the inside and the details
  • Stock counted, so "available" is true
  • Delivery terms set

"Ask on WhatsApp" is still on the page for real questions. It just stops being your first and only answer.

Reply with saved replies, not robot replies

Ngozi set up an auto-reply on her WhatsApp: "Hi! Thanks for contacting us. Price is in DM." A buyer messaged "How much is the blue one?" and got that message back. The buyer thought: you haven't told me anything. They went to the next seller.

Auto-replies are where many sellers go wrong. When your reply is an automated message standing in for a person, buyers feel brushed off. And an automatic "Available!" when the item is already sold is worse, because it breaks the one thing a buyer needs from you: trust.

Here's a fair way to draw the line:

  • Fine: an honest away message that says when you'll be back, like "I'm away until 4pm and I'll reply then."
  • Not fine: an auto-reply that is the only response, or one that confirms availability or payment.
  • Better: saved quick replies that you send yourself. If you use the WhatsApp Business app, it has a quick replies feature for exactly this.

A saved reply for "how much?" could be:

Hi! Thanks for asking ๐Ÿ˜Š You can see the price, colours and delivery for this item here: [your product link]. If anything isn't clear, just ask me.

You press one button, a person still sends it, and the buyer gets a real answer in seconds.

Your phone is your shop door

Kelechi sells phone accessories. Data is expensive, so he switches off his mobile data in the morning and checks his phone again around 6pm.

One day at 11am a buyer placed an order. At 11:20 the buyer tapped "I have paid" and then waited. Tunde saw everything at 6:30pm. The buyer had messaged twice, got no reply, and had already bought from someone else.

Kelechi wasn't careless. Saving data is a sensible thing to do. But a shop door that's locked all day costs more than the data.

An unanswered order often ends in a cancellation, and a high cancellation rate works against your seller status. To reach โญ Reliable you need a cancellation rate under 5%.

Here are ways to save data without going offline:

  • Turn off automatic download of photos and videos in WhatsApp, so it doesn't fetch everything in every group.
  • Use your phone's data saver mode.
  • Use Wi-Fi at home or in your shop when you can.
  • Consider a small separate data plan just for business.

And if you really can't be online all day, be honest about it. Put your reply hours in your bio or status, for example "I reply 9am to 12pm and 4pm to 8pm," and check your phone at those times. Buyers forgive a clear schedule far more easily than silence.

Don't forget your email

When an order comes in on your UPshop store, you get a WhatsApp notification, and you also get emails for new orders and for payment claims.

Bisi checks WhatsApp but rarely opens her email. A buyer paid on Tuesday and claimed payment. The notice sat in her inbox until Thursday. For two days the buyer waited, worried, and finally stopped replying.

When a buyer taps "I have paid", they're waiting on you. Read the notice, check your bank app to confirm the money is really there, then confirm the order on your dashboard and send the goods.

Make email easy to keep up with:

  • Add your email account to your phone and turn notifications on.
  • Check it at least twice a day, with the same habit as WhatsApp.
  • If you can't find the emails, look in spam and mark them "not spam."

A simple daily routine

  • Morning: check WhatsApp, email and your dashboard for new orders and payment claims.
  • Midday: a quick check, and update stock if something sold.
  • Evening: check your bank app for payments, confirm orders, and reply to anything left.
  • Always: keep your reply hours visible and your quick replies saved.

Make "how much?" work for you

"How much?" doesn't have to cost you a sale. Answer once on your page, reply like a person, and keep your phone on when a buyer is waiting.
